Under 25 & Under 21 Car Rental in Los Angeles
Yes, we rent to drivers ages 18 to 24. Here is exactly what you need to know.
Most national car rental chains make renting under 25 nearly impossible—and they block drivers under 21 entirely. At Marathon, we specialize in young driver rentals. Whether you are a local student, a visitor from out of state, or an international traveler, we have a reliable vehicle for you.
To keep our rentals safe and affordable, we have specific age guidelines, surcharges, and insurance requirements. Review the simple rules below to get rolling.
Our Rental Guidelines by Age Group
Drivers Ages 21 to 24
- Vehicle Options: You can rent most vehicles in the Marathon fleet (excluding Luxury, Sport Cars, and 15-Passenger Vans).
- Surcharge: A low $10 per day young driver fee applies (fees vary by vehicle type and are subject to change).
Drivers Ages 18 to 20
- Vehicle Options: You can rent Economy, Compact, and Intermediate-sized vehicles. (Please select "18-20" as your age group when booking).
- Surcharge: A $25 per day young driver fee applies (fees vary by vehicle type and are subject to change).
Requirements for Drivers Ages 18 to 20
If you are under 21, please ensure you have the following ready prior to your pick-up date:
- Valid Driver’s License: Must be active and in good standing.
- Major Credit Card: Must be in your name (please review our debit card policy during booking if you do not have a credit card).
- Your Own Full-Coverage Auto Insurance: You must have personal auto insurance that fully transfers to a rental car. Your policy must include:
- Liability Coverage: Covers third parties if you are at fault.
- Collision Coverage: Covers physical damage to the Marathon rental vehicle.
- No Rental Company Insurance Sales: State and company regulations dictate that Marathon cannot sell insurance coverage to renters under the age of 21. You must provide your own.
Guidelines for International Renters (Under 21)
If you are visiting from outside the United States and are under 21, you must secure transferable coverage through one of the following methods:
- Option A (Liability): Purchase travel insurance that specifically states in writing that it provides third-party liability coverage for rental cars in the U.S. (please bring a printed copy of this policy).
- Option B (Liability): Purchase a temporary "non-owned vehicle" liability policy from an active U.S. insurance agency. Minimum state limits are accepted.
- Collision Coverage Requirement: Because U.S. insurance agencies do not sell physical damage (collision) coverage to non-car owners, and most travel insurance plans exclude it, you must use a major credit card that provides rental car collision benefits to pay for your rental. Please verify this coverage directly with your credit card issuer beforehand.
